Born in Saudi Arabia but raised in California under the household of a single mother, identity and identity politics have always been a constant in his life. After eventually graduating from the University of California, Santa Barbara, Sami began exploring those themes through his work in digital media. Eventually transitioning to documentary journalism through MSNBC’s Vocativ and then his work for Vice, he found his foothold in non-fiction story telling. Since then he’s gone on to direct and produce for a wide range of genres including true crime, docu-follow, reality, and more. He’s been nominated for an Emmy through is directing for Intervention’s special season “The Heroin Triangle.” He continues to focus on the voices rarely heard and those of us not often seen.
